Prof. Dr. Christian von Coelln
Professor Dr. Christian von Coelln was born in 1967 in Düsseldorf. After finishing school he completed a bank training at the Simonbank AG, Düsseldorf and then his military service at the signal battalion 820. From 1990 to 1995 he studied law at Passau University and completed his legal training in the Munich Higher Regional Court district. From 1995 he was a research assistant at the chair for public and administrative law as well as commercial administrative law and media law of Professor Dr. Herbert Bethge at the University of Passau. In 2000 he completed his doctorate on “The application of federal law in accordance with state basic rights?” here; his post-doctoral thesis, completed in 2004, was titled “Zur Medienöffentlichkeit der Dritten Gewalt” (which examined legal aspects of the media’s access to jurisdiction in the constitutional state). In 2008, after a post as acting professor at the LMU Munich, he was appointed to Cologne University where he holds the chair for public and administrative law as well as law relating to academic institutions and universities and media law. His area of specialisation in research, teaching and practice is media law. Christian von Coelln is also co-editor and co-author of a commentary on Bavaria’s media law. He belongs to the circle of publishers of the AfP, is a member of the board of the Study Group for Press Law and Freedom of the Press e.V. and also works as a consultant and process representative in this field.
